Dr. Michal Doucha, academic member of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, visited the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM) on Saturday and Sunday, 11-12 January 2020.

On Sunday, he presented a lecture entitled:

"Isomorphisms between spaces of Lipschitz functions".

The academic members and graduate students of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of FUM and Hakim Sabzevari University participated in this seminar. In addition, during his visit, a meeting with postgraduate students and Ph.D. students was held at the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences. Participants discussed some of the topics and issues at the frontiers of Mathematical Sciences and some of the open problems and solutions to research issues. The session ended with questions and answers from the participants. It should be noted that Dr. Michal Doucha was one of the invited speakers at the 7th Workshop on Algebraic Operators and its Applications, which organized by the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) on 6-9, January 2020 in Tehran.

In order to introduce and inform the activities of the International Academic Relation Department (IARD) at the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM), a meeting was held at the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of FUM on Saturday, November 8, 2019 with the presence of Dr. Ghandeharion, Head of Planning and Development of International Cooperation and Associate Professor of the Department of English, the Faculty of Letters and Humanities. The academic members and graduate students of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences participated in this meeting. First, Dr. Ghandeharion presented some recent activities of IARD including the benefits of memorandum of understanding (MOU) and agreements established between FUM and various universities outside Iran, regulations for the exchange of professors and graduate students, supporting the academic staffs and students for attending international conferences and the admission of the research-based Ph.D. programs. Then, she explained how to obtain financial support from the European Union and providing partial support for sabbatical leave. Furthermore, she introduced various sections of the Erasmus+ programs. She claimed that for the first step, the faculty members and graduate students can consider applying for short-term projects and short visits, which are more likely to be successful. The session ended with questions and answers from the participants, and it was decided that workshops regarding international fundraising and grants would be held for the faculty members at FUM to introduce different programs, especially in Germany and Austria.

The fifth Biennial International Group Theory Conference (BIGTC) held on 1-4 July 2019 at the Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia, in cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran.

Prof. Ahmad Erfanian from the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad was the Chair of Scientific Committee of 5BIGTC. He said that it was very important to make a conference to discuss specific topics so that participants could ask questions easily and form collaborations. This time Indonesia was chosen to be the host of the fifth BIGTC. The conference was intended as a forum to exchange ideas among researchers and students in the field of Group Theory.

The first BIGTC was held in 2011 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, then in Turkey (2013), Iran (2015), Malaysia (2017), and this year the FMIPA-ITB Algebra Expertise Group organized 5BIGTC at ITB, Indonesia. Participants from different countries such as Turkey, the United States, Australia, Iran, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, India, the Philippines, Algeria, South Africa, and Indonesia attended the conference.

The main speakers at 5BIGTC were Prof. Kuzucuoglu, the Middle East Technical University, Turkey and  Prof.  Lewis, Kent State University, USA.  The other invited speakers were Prof.  Elder, the University of Technology Sydney, Australia, Prof.  Iranmanesh , Tarbiat Modares University, Iran,  Prof.   Tan,  National University, Singapore. Prof.  Minh Nguyen , Mahidol University, Thailand,  Prof. Abdollahi, the University of Isfahan,  Iran, Prof.  Sarmin, Universiti Teknologi, Malaysia, Prof  Moghaddam, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, Prof.  Darafsheh, the University of Tehran, Iran  and Prof. Manabu Oura, Kanazawa University Japan.

dfIt should be mentioned that the cooperation agreement between the University of Natural Sciences in Indonesia and the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad have been signed this year.

A seminar on "Big Data Performance Management" was presented by Professor Ali Emrouznejad from Aston University, UK, on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences.

Abstract:

Big Data is a major source of change in today’s world. It is without doubt a source of immense economic and social value with the potential to impact individuals, organizations, and society alike in ways that are yet to be fully explored. Organizations are constantly collecting a variety of data, such as standard tables, text, pictures, and videos, of unprecedented sizes (millions or billions of records / variables) and from various sources, with the aim to use such data to improve their operations / services and create competitive advantage. There is a collective assumption that if organizations can learn to harness Big Data, then their operational capabilities would be transformed to be more efficient. On the other hand, in the large and complex organizations, performance management includes activities which ensure that goals are consistently being met in an effective and efficient manner. Traditional performance management has proven to be insufficient to assess organizations as it focuses on one specific angle only. In the era of big data, organizations can be assessed from different perspectives and so a more complicated performance measurement system is necessary.

This seminar aims to provide the state-of-the-art Big Data performance measurement models with several applications such as finance/banking, hospitals and health care systems, educational institutions, transportation and hospitality, etc.
